Listen: Black Girls – “Buyin' Time” [Premiere]
Indie glam-rock band, Black Girls, have released their latest single, “Buyin’ Time”, a laid-back phantasmagoria of infectious guitar riffs and slick vocal nuances that evokes images of a southern –talkin’, whisky swillin’ Steely Dan.
Taken from the Virginia natives’ recently released third album, Claire Sinclaire, “Buyin’ Time” opens with a howling, grinding motif from lead guitarist Mike Bryant that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on the seminal, eponymous Stone Roses’ record. Continuing the throwback theme, the rest of the band jump into action with a smooth combination of splashy cymbals, melancholic chord work and tumbling bass-work à la late-90 Bright Eyes. Drummer Stephen Farris provides most of the polished yet husky lead vocal work until the reggae-influenced coda, when front man Drew Gillihan waxes lyrically (and rather contrarily) over falsetto, doo-wop backing for his sweetheart to “Stay away, honey, stay awhile.”
Black Girls’ latest full length, Claire Sinclaire, was released on March 8 via Snuff Records (listen here) but is released in physical formats today. The band will embark on a 10-date tour of the US on 9 April.
