Bellatrix details an abusive digital-era romance on "iPhone"
Taken from her forthcoming EP I Was An Aphid, Bellatrix's new single “iPhone” delivers an alt-pop soundscape in a package of futuristic synth-tinged sonics and glitchy vocals.
Toeing the line between introspective and imaginative with delicate artistry, “iPhone” reflects Bellatrix's natural ability to turn simple narratives into stunning, dynamic tales.
Her textured soundscapes detail the conflict between heavy subject matter and anthemic delivery as she explores her experience of an abusive relationship. With poignant songwriting elevated by a sugary electro-tinged soundscape, the empowering track is a catchy and compelling glimpse of what to expect from her new EP.
Taking its name from a likeness to American feminist and civil rights activist Audre Lorde, I Was An Aphid is a collection of four tracks that delve into the singer’s journey of finding strength beyond the toxicity that once surrounded her.
"In 2019, I broke up from an abusive relationship that I'd been in for three years. When I look back, I think 'fucking hell, how did that happen?' because I never expected it to happen to me,” says Bellatrix on the single and upcoming EP. “This EP is a journey through all that: the relationship, the end of it, and what happened afterwards.”
With a versatile sound that leans in and out experimentation with ease, Bellatrix is undeniably flourishing as she beckons a new wave of reflective alt-pop.
