Listen: Banks - "Drowning" (Dave Glass Animals Remix)
Gothic RnB maven Banks has lent her newest drop, the shuddering, accusatory “Drowning”, to Dave Bayley of Oxford quartet Glass Animals. His rework adds some mechanical roughness to the track’s sleepy tale of devious and dishonest lovers.
The remix is (unsurprisingly) a perfect marriage of opposing styles - certainly two diverse interpretations on the meaning of RnB. Bayley keeps Banks’ signature languorous vocals – to distort that heady, sensual voice would have been a shame indeed – but embosses the space around it with the kind of shaky, jittering, electronics that Glass Animals have made their forte. Where the original rested atop finely-tuned layers of subtle beats and handclaps, the remix plays off acutely refracted natural sounds: ticks intercut one another, staccato flutes flicker like the movement of an insect’s wings, while cluttered samples sit just behind the lyrics, a hive of clicking and sputtering, ready to overwhelm the track at any moment.
Given Bayley’s outspoken love of hip-hop, his remix of Banks seems fitting. Both artists fall into the gaps between defined genres, appealing at once to listeners with an ear for the dark or psychedelic and also to those who prefer something smoother with an occasionally bitter aftertaste. This remix gives Bayley the appropriate starting point from which to put his influences into effect.
Turning a slow jam into what feels eerily like a trap cut is no easy feat, but it’s one that Bayley manages with necessary aplomb.
