BABE return with new album Kiss & Tell; listen to R&B-flecked first single "Ayo"
It's been two years since Glasgow's BABE gave us the Volery Flighty album, but they're back with album number two, due in March 2017.
"Ayo" is the first track to be taken from Kiss & Tell, and it's a sign of the progression the band has made since their debut album.
Previously regarded as unclassifiable, this track points to the overall sound of BABE's second album; singer Gerard Black's falsetto is still in place but "Ayo" is very much a late-night slow jam based around snapping percussion (courtesy in part of new member John Baillie Jr of Bossy Love), buzzing synths and 707s. We'd hesitate to use the word "mature", but this is a sultry R&B groove full of confidence and knowing charm.
Of the track, Black says "This is the first time I'd ever improvised a vocal melody without writing it on a keyboard first and was the first stab at R&B - I was listening to a lot of Jeremih at the time. The original version of 'Ayo' was a slow jam which I initially asked John [Bailie Jr.] to do a 'remix' of. What he delivered really brought the song to life, so much so we ended up asking him to do the rest of the album and eventually asking him to play drums live."
