Ava Freddy's "Appily" is a rich and dramatic doom-folk tale of love and woe
Ava Freddy is a Norwegian singer-songwriter with more than a passing interest in making love and relationships sound like the most morbid thing imaginable.
On new single "Appily", the first to be taken from her new album, Freddy weaves a dark tale of promise turned to dismay soundtracked with rich instrumentation.
As the Norwegian's delicious voice picks apart her latest disappointment, there's accordian, saw, brass and twanging guitar creating a dramatic soundtrack which recalls Tom Waits, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. It's gothic folk, but with a theatricality which brings a certain lightness.
If nothing else, "Appily" is likely to be the best, most tense and seductive apple-based song you're likely to have heard this year.
"Appily" is taken from the forthcoming album Appily Ever After.
