Austel's debut single "Crows" is haunting and entrancing in equal measure
Austel is the moniker for classically trained artist Annie Rew Shaw, and with her debut single "Crows" she has created a song that embodies soaring landscapes as it grapples with the fear of the unknown.
Austel's strength comes with the way she effortlessly expresses emotion through sweeping soundscapes and textured elegance. By layering twinkling synths and light-as-air vocals she creates a unique type of magic that rests between the layers that build and build to glorious effect.
The song was written with music technologist Adam Stark, with whom Austel has been able to find her signature sound and the direction in which she wants her music to go forward, a sound which is entrancing and intoxicating in its simple beauty.
Austel has explained how the song is meant to be an expression of her anxiety of taking a chance and pushing her life in a new direction, saying: "'Crows' was one of the first songs Adam and I wrote together. It was the end of December 2016 - a year where I’d made some big changes in my life and felt full of anticipation, but also fear of the unknown. The lyrics for the song became a mantra for me; I was feeling quite lost and lonely and they served as a reminder to myself to seek inner strength and independence."
"Crows" is taken from Austel's upcoming EP entitled Unfold, which is due to be released later this year.
