Matt Cardle makes a surprising appearance on Attaque's searing synth-pop track "Kids"
As a product of reality TV show/Simon Cowell wankfest The X Factor, Matt Cardle's struggle for credibility is all too real.
Despite the massive fame generated by his winning the X-factor almost a decade ago, Cardle has struggled to make waves beyond winner's single "When We Collide", a saccharine Biffy Clyro cover that failed to do justice to his talent, homegrown and honed as a member of previous outfit Seven Summers. 14-track fourth album Time To Be Alive arrived in 2018, with Cardle spending his time between the studio and the stage. Now, Cardle has been recruited by British producer Attaque – an old friend and experienced techno/electronic artist – to provide vocals for new track "Kids".
Inspired by the pair's shared childhood, "Kids" is a searing, immersive electro-pop track with a rich sonic landscape. Whilst Cardle's voice is a pleasant and surprising component, it's clear that "Kids" could stand alone, regardless of celebrity contribution. Indeed, following the release, Attaque may be somewhat closer to mainstream success as a relatively recent Amplify Recordings signee.
"When me and Matt Cardle were fifteen, spending time skateboarding together and playing in separate grunge bands, I don’t think we could have envisioned a future where I’d be a former techno DJ and he’d be a former X-Factor winner and that we’d then come together to write an emotional electronic track reflecting on the past... but we did."
Attaque, real name Dominic Gentry, has previously produced works for Charlotte De Witte and others alongside his own creations. He counts Burial, Pantha Du Prince, and Mogwai among his many influences, and has earned endorsement and radio play from Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Toddla T, and more.
