Having already released a top-selling album in their home country, Parisian duo As Animals are ready to share their unique blend of indie pop with the world. Ahead of the UK release of their debut LP comes new single “Fool”, premiering today on Best Fit.
After the dramatic stomp of “I See Ghost (Ghost Gunfighters)” and the clap-happy climaxes of “Big Slap”, “Fool” is a bit of a sonic departure. A ringing guitar trades off with a slithering bass line before both are joined by a gentle vibraphone melody. Taken together, these elements give the verses something of a 70’s euro-disco feel.
The chorus, however, is sweet, straightforward pop. Arpeggiated guitars provide a nice padding, but it’s singer Zara Desbonnes that does most of the work here. Luckily, she’s up to the task; her voice is as charming and beautiful as ever as she sings: “I cry in the morning when you tell I’m a fool”.
“Fool” is mellow gold, an exciting display of the sonic range As Animals are comfortable in. The UK release of their self-titled debut album is set for 3 March.
