Atomnation co-founder Applescal shares "Overseas" ahead of new album [Premiere]
If you’re not familiar with Pascal Terstappen’s dreamy dancefloor electronica, you’re about to be. The Atomnation co-founder's new LP, For, is out on 18 May, and you can listen to a new single from it below – a silky minimalist number nestling somewhere between the club and the bedroom called "Overseas".
Featuring a sturdy start, we’re treated to a surprisingly sweet change after the heavy-ish bassline and lurching drum pattern gives way to delicate and melodic keyboards, with a whispered, looping sample not far behind it. Downtempo in nature but offering a few twists and turns along the way, Amsderdam-based Terstappen is no novice to understanding electronic genres. For is his fourth LP as Applescal since he first emerged in 2009 with A Slaves Commitment.
Speaking about the song, Applescal said: "'Overseas' is one of the last tracks I produced for my upcoming album. It's written half in Moabit and half in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin. In the beginning this track was more of an obscure song with a dark touch, something that shouldn't make it to the LP. But at some point I added this Rhodes sample of an Ametsub track and the mood of the production changed. The transition in ‘Overseas’ feels a bit like a chimera to me, a battle between the good and bad thoughts."
