Antwon’s new track “In Ecstasy” finds the San Jose MC pursuing some of the golden era sounds recently revived by the likes of Chance the Rapper, a lush overload of retro RnB samples with a fantastically NSFW opening.
Intro aside, it’s clear the song is about sex without being sexy. For all his bluster the California native is more interested in boasts about his success and making food references à la Action Bronson than actually seducing you. It’s a jumped-up homage to 90s gangsta rap, with producer DJ Sexplay providing beats under riotous brass and a soulful guitar riff that stands shoulder to shoulder with Antwon’s mellow, easy delivery.
It’s short: a bite sized delight. That said, it demands repeated plays; brimming with bravado, this is a sun-drenched ode to the West Coast.
