Pastel pop princess Anja Kotar makes dystopia sound chic on "Kids"
Anja Kotar may have a voice like Ariana Grande, but the Slovenian upstart's unique style is all her very own.
New single "Kids" is an acerbic take on the dystopian pseudo-reality of social media, in which Kotar pairs her biting lyric with peppy, sunshine-y pop for maximum juxtapositional impact. The "what if phones, but too much" cliché of Generation Z media (I'm looking at you, Charlie Brooker) is jolted back into relevancy by Kotar's fresh, post-millennial voice; her perspective sharply observational alongside its self-deprecation.
Lines such as "Being young and engaged in the modern age/Only seen on the screen, internet's our stage," demonstrate an acute self-awarness, deliciously amped by the irony of their delivery via "Kids"' perfectly styled music video. We get a sense that Kotar – like the social media personalities her track aims to critique – isn't telling us the whole story. Like every social media personality, however, we can't help ourselves watching out for her next (carefully curated) move.
"The music video features six different colored outfits and a correlating color flower for each of them," Kotar explains. "The white background represents the cold, harsh reality of our world, while the flowers represent the fairytale we present online. Each flower has a meaning that describes a characteristic of the millennial generation."
She lists the meanings of each colour: pink for grace, blue for vanity, yellow for idealism, purple for capriciousness, red for affection, and green for rejection, before adding that, "throughout the video, I carry more and more flowers in my hands, alluding to getting caught up in the online fantasy and progressively exaggerating it."
