Brighton trio Animal Language return with quarter-life crisis ditty "Peppermint Delight"
Your twenties are meant to be the best years of your life. Carefree fun devoid of much responsibility and bursting with adult independence.
But what happens to many, especially following the hedonistic years of university, is a lack of direction or certainty. Up until now everything has followed a somewhat expected course. Suddenly, the difficulty of finding a job or being at least satisfied when you do so hits you full force.
"'Peppermint Daylight' was a track written out of the post-university confusion of approaching our mid-20s and an introspective realisation of our hypocritical cynicism," Brighton trio Animal Language say of their latest track, an ode to the graduate blues.
"[It's] observed through our hazy and skewed microscope," the band (comprised of Max Fletcher [guitar/vocals], Kieran Mansfield [bass/vocals], Jono Helsby [drums]) add, as if to explain the song's woozy guitar licks and brush stroke-like drum lulls.
Indeed, "Peppermint Daylight" does revel in a puzzled haze. Loose, jangling components may channel indie-pop at the start but by the end it's a gorgeous, dreamy, psychedelic fug of a track. Lyrics "you're running late again / reflection 25 / 'cus I'm still burning up / never the first one in line" are as coded as they are clear; a jumbled sentiment that perfectly mirrors the confusion of young adult life.
Animal Language play Brighton's The Green Door Store this Thursday 5 November, supporting Blonde Bunny. "Peppermint Daylight" is engineered and produced by Martin Hollis.
