Amy Milner alters her perspective on the sun-drenched Americana of "Plans"
Amy Milner is back with her first full EP since 2017’s Light of Day, boasting a bolder, richer sound on the lead single "Plans".
Having teased us with a couple of single releases towards the end of last year, it’s clear that time spent in the studio with her long-time collaborator Tim Larcombe has been fruitful for Suffolk based singer-songwriter Amy Milner. And even when the pair haven’t been making music together, they’ve been drawing attention to the need for women to have more prominent roles in the music studio, having written a thoughtful piece for LOBF on the topic.
With her powerful vocals deservedly taking centre stage in earlier previews "Shine Off" and "A Little More", that vibe continues on Milner’s new single “Plans". This time around though, Milner’s voice is also accompanied by a fuller, richer array of sounds.
“Plans" is reminiscent of sun-drenched Americana, packed to bursting with jangling, driving guitars and intermittent electronic flourishes. It is a song that wraps you in its warm embrace from start to finish, evoking images of driving along a coastal highway with the roof down, the wind in your hair and the warmth of the sun on your neck.
Having previously drawn comparison to Lykke Li and James Blake, in this latest offering Milner sits closer to the likes of Maggie Rogers or Fleetwood Mac. “Plans” is a triumphant song which ensures that there’ll be plenty of excitement for the rest of the EP when it’s released and places her firmly as one to watch.
Speaking of the single, Milner says: “It's easy to get stuck in our ways and end up dragging our heels, ticking boxes and not giving much thought to the things that truly make us happy,” Shares Milner of the new single. “'Plans' is an expression of reassessment and hope upon meeting someone who puts the heart back into living, and opens your eyes to things you didn't realise mattered so much.
"The song brings together two people who are largely opposite in character, making the pull of each to the other quite unexpected,” she continues. "No matter how successful you could become in your job, or skillful you might be in your discipline, the key to true contentment is surely to love, be loved and spread happiness by embracing your own?”.
