Alice Jemima shares new track "When You Dance" and talks tomorrow's debut album release

02 March 2017, 10:00 | Written by Matthew Kent

Taken from Alice Jemima's self-titled debut album, to be released tomorrow, "When You Dance" is streaming here exclusively in advance of tomorrow's release.

From the age of 12, Alice Jemima was already writing her own songs. Now she's 22 years old and ready to release her debut album. Following her debut EP Liquorice last year and singles "Electric" and "Dodged A Bullet", Jemima's minimalist pop songwriting has won over fans and critics alike. Jemima's cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity", inspired by Chet Faker's version, became a viral success amassing more than 3 million streams.

"When You Dance" is about feeling like you're the only people in the room, or even in the world, and sharing a moment betweent the two of you whilst letting everyone else disappear. Shaped around a guitar riff, Jemima's soft croon and the percussive beats which build through the track add to its warm flavour.

We spoke to Alice Jemima about tomorrow's album release, this new track as well as asking her about the best place to listen to the full length.

Your debut album is being released tomorrow, how are you feeling right now?
Very excited! And slightly nervous. But it’s been a long time coming, so I’m pretty ready for it to go out into the world now.

"When You Dance" is one of our favourites from the record, can you tell us what you wrote the song about?
Oh cool! It’s a favourite one of mine too. I wrote this song about dancing with someone I was very into! A moment you have with that person on a dance floor - surrounded by lots of other people, but the feeling that it’s just you and them… nobody else one else on the dancefloor matters.

Where does this new one fit into the album as a whole?
I feel it’s a more of an uplifting track, and also quite a positive song which fits in quite well with the mood of other songs like "Live For Now", but also acts as a counterpoint to the darker songs like "Toxic" and "No More".

What do you think would be the ideal setting for people to listen Alice Jemima from start to finish?
At night, in a kitchen with friends?!

If you were to describe the album using three other albums which would you choose?
The xx- xx
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
Chet Faker - Built on Glass

Alice Jemima is out tomorrow via Sunday Best Recordings.
