After a string of enigmatic videos that nodded towards what Leeds’ Adult Jazz have been working hard to achieve, the band have this week dropped their first single “Springful”, a dreamy and more than promising debut.
It’s refreshing to see that a band of today’s success may not be measured simply by their Facebook likes. Adult Jazz’s internet presence has hardly been a priority; indeed, it was actually a fan who created their Facebook page. And lo, the band have still played many high-profile shows including support slots for the Canadian art-pop heroes Braids, an appearance at Holland’s Le Guess Who festival, not to mention an almost full-to-capacity performance at Live At Leeds. Adult Jazz are going to be successful for the right reasons, and their debut single “Springful” is a testament to this.
The first track taken from their debut 12″, “Springful” has intensely delicate and crisp production values that emphasise its segmented structure; from its deep blues intro to its heavenly close. The song is full of delightful chops and squalls much like that of Dirty Projectors, and like the latter, Adult Jazz have shown that they can create such intelligent, alternative-pop that it demands re-listen, upon re-listen, upon re-listen.
The Am Gone/Springful 12 “ will be released 13 January 2014 via Spare Thought.
