0171 have released the new single “Red Light” and accompanying video, taken from their debut EP of the same name. With just three tracks in their current discography, including “SMTHN RL” and “1000 Words”, the band have made a strong commentary on relationships and connections in our current digital world.
On its surface, 0171's new track is a rushing piece of electro-pop where dual vocals celebrate their new-found superstardom. Yet beneath echoing steel drums and towering synths, there's an underlying feeling of anxious uncertainty that has become synonymous with the band’s sound.
Their latest release “Red Light” is their most ambitious to date: its slow-build animatronic opening verse bringing a sense of drama before digital beats and distorted instrumentals elevate the duo’s sound and bring a new club-style element into their music. While the chorus may be devoid of human voice, it still evokes rushes of emotion, and the electronics paint vivid colours, all of which feel destined to be enjoyed in the nighttime.
Speaking on the track and video, Joe Bedell-Brill and Georgie Hoare (who make up 0171) explained: “People can feel anxious about the lack of privacy in the modern world. In 'Red Light'; we flipped that round to imagine a couple who are excited by the idea that the world is watching them and their love. We thought about how the act of filming experiences makes those experiences feel realer for many people these days. Everyone is a star in their videos.”
Their music teeters between insular confessions and outpourings of emotion, taking in the genres of dance, dream-pop and alternative. The pair have a clear dynamic when it comes to construction of celestial, consuming tracks and leave us curious for more.
