Stream Mutes' second solo EP, No One Is Nowhere [Premiere]
With the brand new solo EP No One Is Nowhere premiering today on Best Fit, Birmingham-based Mutes is achieving chillingly beautful in a way no one else can.
"The title of the EP sounds profound, but is actually just a simple fact", Mutes frontman James says. Simple though it's title may be, the release is far from it. Layers of intricate melodies swoon, soar and entwine, tapestries of sound embodying a crystal daybreak. "Memory Serves" has already captured our hearts with it's eternal, unhurried nature, and the rest of the EP is certainly no less bewitching.
As haunting as it is enticing, the choral refrain of "Soberless" to "cover your eyes" continues to swim through your system long after the track resounds to a halt. The resounding chimes of "Horror" wade enchantingly into life, tenderly evolving blankets of sound echoing with an emphatic calm that rises to a chilling close.
The record's heart-stopping highlights come in the form of the EP's final tracks. "Dust" meanders into existence with no purpose but it's own. It's resonant soundbed and gently rising textures swoon seductively as they weave their magic all around you, but it's "(Im)possibility" that will really leave you spellbound. With clear vocals and a simple acoustic melody, the song showcases Mutes at his most awe-strikingly intimate, crafting a sound you can't help but fall for.
James said of the EP: "It's less sonically cohesive than my first - it's made up of a bunch of stuff recorded during early 2014 and was recorded on a few different machines, including my Tascam Portastudio with dirty mic inputs. It's my attempt at a 'folk' record I guess - pretty minimalistic by my standards. The vocals and lyrics also take a front seat, which is terrifying for me... It's split into an ambient first 3/4's and a more decipherable final 1/4. Also contains my best John Fahey impression. Hope you enjoy it!"
With a debut full-band release set for early 2015 via One Note Forever, this is an act we expect to see soar. To tide over your appetite until then, you can stream No One Is Nowhere exclusively below. Download it via their Bandcamp page from today.
