New York rapper Doley Bernays succeeds where many newcomers struggle, creating an intricately-produced, cohesive debut EP.
Just In Case finds Bernays enlisting the likes of Johnny Jewel’s Chromatics and impressive upcoming producer MP Williams.
Rarely do new artists put forth a project that is as cohesive as Bernays’ Just In Case. Perhaps that is in large part due to the musical chemistry with Bernays’ executive producer, MP Williams, who produced nearly every track on the record. Chromatics feature on the EP’s first cut ‘Just In Case/ReeLife Sound,’ and seem to foreshadow the autobiographical tales soon to be told.
Songs like ‘Blessed’ and ‘Till We Fall’ are the most upbeat tracks, while melancholic cut ‘I Know Pain’ featuring Euro League may be the most personal – detailing gruesome hardships of the Bronx, his son’s sickness, and the murder of a close friend. The gritty street tales continue on the atmospheric, Flight Facilities-sampling ‘Funerals and Release Dates’.
‘Drown’ straddles the hip-hop/R&B fence as most of Drake’s massive tunes do, so it should come as no surprise to learn it was produced by Jordan Evans, DZL, and Matthew Burnett with additional production from Williams. Evans and Burnett were behind “Pound Cake” on Nothing Was The Same.
The newcomer clearly is one to watch from New York City. Just In Case is now available for stream/download on Doley Bernays’ Soundcloud below.
