Alex Winston is American, but she seems close to taking on ‘honorary Brit’ status. Her Basement Covers EP was full of reworkings of British bands’ tracks, and her offbeat arrangements have always seemed to have something of the English eccentric about them.
On her debut album, though, Winston sounds distinctly American. King Con is a big record – an album made up of foot-stamping singalongs that manage to pair earworm melodies with Newsom-esque vocal delivery. It’s a delightful combination that is simultaneously familiar and unpredictable.
King Con is out now on V2. Alex Winston plays London’s XOYO on 4 April. Tickets are on sale now.
