Track By Track: Odonis Odonis on Post Plague
Toronto experimentalists Odonis Odonis write for Best Fit about the inspirations behind the noises on new record Post Plague.
Fearless
The whole record idea stems from the idea of transhumanity. We were inspired by Iranian Philosopher FM 2030 and how in the future we won’t be bound by our biological form. "Fearless" is the moment you transfer human consciousness into AI.
"So long as we are confined to these biological makeups, there will always be inequality, human tragedy, and human suffering." - FM 2030
Needs
"Needs" is the song that caused our band to snap, let go of the past, and progress as something new.The world is quickly becoming a cold place to live. Narcissism has reached an all time high. This song confronts this new climate. How far are you willing to go at someone else’s expensive? When communication is no longer face to face it gets easier to step on people on the way to the top.
That’s How It Goes
As technology advances we begin to lose our basic humanity and compassion. We age we become desensitized and focused on objects rather than human empathy. That’s how it goes is a nihilistic take on our focus on status quo. It’s one of the first songs we wrote for Post Plague that encompasses all the sounds we were going for.
Nervous
Since the beginning of human existence, mankind has obsessed with creating perfection, but the flesh will always remain flawed. We now live in an era where we can selectively post on social media and create an idealized version of ourselves to present to the world. What if you could take that one step further? What if you could be the perfect version of yourself? Take a full body image scan of yourself at your favorite age and transplant all your favorite memories into a perfect Avatar of one's self. Sounds crazy but all of this is around the corner and things are about to speed up.
BLTZ
When life presents an opportunity you take it. It’s easy to reflect in hindsight of how things went wrong or even when things went well but as you move through life it’s not always easy to tell. Trusting your gut instincts and taking a chance is what it’s all about. This song in itself embodies that essence of taking a chance and embracing it’s weirdness. I can’t even describe what genre this songs is suppose to be.
Pencils
This song is actually part of collaboration with Kathryn Calder (New Pornographers) and Brasstronaut, and was intended to be on Kathryn's Last record. It didn’t end up ultimately fitting her record so we ended up reimagining it for Post Plague. The song is about when you know a relationship isn’t going to work but you stay in it for much longer then you should because of familiarity.
Game
This is song was heavily influenced by that moment in Silence Of The Lambs where Buffalo Bill tucks his dick between his legs to "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus. The juxtaposition between the music imagery is haunting and is a very powerful technique. I wanted to figure out a way to bring that vibe in Post Plague. Lyrically it explores disconnect between face to face, online relationships and dating in this post-apocalyptic future. We are currently in a state of a lot gender friction, maybe with onset of VR and AI people will walk away from physical relationships altogether and opt out for a virtual one instead.
Vanta Black
"The time for half measures has passed. We need to be bold to make the changes needed to ward off an impending doom. Enough of constant overanalyzing and overthinking that has stopped progress. We need to look deep into the abyss and jump head first into the darkest substance ever known, Vantablack."
Betrayal
The moment you realize you’ve been betrayed by someone you trust can be epically disappointing. Take that concept and put on larger scale and you have "Betrayal". People that are supposed to be guiding society are letting the people down for power/greed, leading us into a dark, short-sighted unknown future. Musically I wanted it to feel like "Born Slippy" by Underworld but it didn’t end up like it... but that's okay.
Lust
It’s probably the most listenable song on record and is the least experimental; the focus was on classic songwriting and I think we achieved it. The idea behind the song is lamenting over basic human emotions after humanity has moved into a not so distant technological future. We yearn for something real, for a simpler time before the era of constant distraction but is it too late.
Post Plague is out now via Felte. Odonis Odonis play London's The Waiting Room on 20 July.
