Track By Track: Nyxe on her Phases EP
Today sees the release of Phases, the first extended player from Californian electronic musician Nyxe.
Finding the midpoint between the new-ageiness of Enya, the gloom of trip hop and shimmering electronica of Glasser, Nyxe's music feels at first nebulous - perhaps due to the ambient synths all across the EP - but under the surface there's a certain power and weight coming from major piano chords and dark, almost gothic beats.
Below, you can stream Nyxe's debut release alongside her exclusive track by track guide.
Without You
"This is my hello, how are you, glad to meet you song. It really goes into the dichotomy that I often feel, that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to but that it's pointless without connection and love. If I were applying to the job of being a person, this song would be the tagline on my resume. Also it has modular synthesizers. Boop."
Beneath The Waves
"I had just come back from my very first tour in the UK and was experiencing post tour depression. A friend of mine tried to cheer me up by inviting me over for dinner and hot tub adventures. Instead, I locked myself in his bathroom in the dark for 30 minutes and composed this entire song on my phone. I'm such a delight."
Never Lost
"This was the first track that I wrote as Nyxe. It is the result of insomnia and my own stubborn desire to craft a world of sounds from my little music cave. Like most of my songs, it came out as a way to process a nameless galaxy of emotions. No matter how dark the world gets, we will never be lost if we just show up for each other. "
Build A Nest
"Another midnight lullaby, composed for a friend I had just met at a show. I really limited myself on this one, as I wanted to express a high level emotion with the most minimal arrangement I could craft. I really had to restrain myself from adding frills all over the place but this song made him cry so apparently, it worked. In conclusion, I am the sort of friend that will make you cry and probably hide in your bathroom to write songs. "
Nyxe's Phases EP is out now and available to buy via iTunes.
