Track By Track: Fyfe on The Space Between
Fyfe writes for us about the stories behind each of the tracks on new album The Space Between, which is an intimate look and life and death told through majestic, inspired pop tones.
Cold Air
The album starts in a maternity ward and so "Cold Air" sets this scene. The room I recorded most of the album in was not very well soundproofed so there are some birds who feature in the background of a lot of the audio takes and I decided to give them their moment by letting them introduce the album.
Love You More
Written from the perspective of a father watching his daughter grow up. Balancing the instinct to protect with the desire to see her flourish in 'dystopian worlds'.
Belong
I wrote this song with Kimbra during a session we had in London. We're fans of each other's work so it was a really fun few days of writing together. We were both feeling a little lost having been touring. It can be a strange experience returning home, to the extent of sometimes questioning where home really is.
Closer
The ability to work anything through with enough time and communication. Also acknowledging that sometimes we could be a lot better at loving and accepting ourselves and if we can start there then we might be more able to accept and understand others. I started writing this track with a great band called Klyne from the Netherlands and then developed it from there.
Stronger
Questioning who you are and so feeling like an imposter and a fraud whilst being pulled in every direction, but ultimately standing firm in who you are and see yourself becoming.
Relax
Responding to stress and anxiety and addressing the pitfalls of judging your worth based on your achievements. I wanted it to be a feel good, energising track, in defiance to those days when you really don’t want to do anything.
Borders
Young love is still love. Imagining a life together without any limitations whether put upon yourself, or others.
Rosa
I wrote this for my niece who you can hear spelling her name at the beginning of the track. I wanted it to be an encouragement not just for her, but for any child to be able to accept who they are.
Fault Lines
The term 'Fault Lines' here is referring to hidden illness and physical ailments which we all carry. I wrote it after the untimely death of a friend and was trying to imagine how it must feel when confronted with the sudden reality that your body is on the edge.
All We Need
It's natural to feel like you wish you could have more time. I wrote this having visited my Gran in a hospice and it’s really saying I wish I could give you more time, but all I can offer is for me to spend my time with you.
Closing Time
Written from the perspective of a grieving spouse at a funeral. Funerals are the final official acknowledgement of our existence and they are quite an abrupt surmising of a life. This song concludes the album in the same way as death so often does, finishing unexpectedly early.
