Track By Track: Evvol on Physical L.U.V

13 May 2016, 12:00

Berlin-based duo Evvol release new EP Physical L.U.V today, and they've run us through it in our latest Track By Track guide.

Evvol is Irish singer Julie Chance and Australian multi-instrumentalist Jane Arnison, and this release - out today - follows last year's gorgeous Eternalism. This EP is a heady concoction, swirling brutal darkwave with saxy '80s pop and gothic experiments.

To celebrate the release, Evvol play The Garage in London on 14 May.

Speaking generally about the EP's construction, the electro-pop sculptors say: "Our creative process takes inspiration from a Gerhard Richter quote that we once saw at an exhibition. He said that his works must at once be deeply personal yet connect on a universal level. The starting point for our work is our personal experience, but as the songs grow, so do the stories."

[DEVT]

"[DEVT]" is an intro to the EP, setting the tone and introducing the themes that we explore. The idea of a back and forth dialogue between lovers, as they traverse the territory of modern love. It's about taking responsibility for yourself and your actions within a relationship - showing up and trying. We think those two things are crucial if you wanna make something work.

The Beat Within

"The Beat Within" is a redemption song of sorts. The steady tempo and gentle beat is a lullaby designed to reassure. Its about being fully self-aware and having the ability to back down in a fight, giving in and letting the other person know you are okay with being wrong sometimes. The rich vocal harmonies encourage this feeling of togetherness that the lyrics echo.

Physical L.U.V

Basically this song is trash-talking an ex-lover. It’s that moment when you realise all that intensity of feeling wasn’t love at all - you were just blinded by the pussy. When we started with this song we were looking for a slow, slinky disco vibe and knew that we wanted to have a tight bassline. The song grew from there. We added the hooky chorus melody sitting on top of our beat and bass. Of course we are suckers for moody, trippy synth lines so they found there way in there too.

Comfort Fit

The name says it all. When everything;- physically, mentally, sexually and spiritually, fits just right, dead comfy. It’s a simple song with a simple message. Musically we wanted it to feel sexy with warm vibes. The beat is layered with slowed down 90’s style break-beat underneath layers of percussion with a strong and kind of unusual snare feature. Again, live bass features in this song, but more than hook-based melodies here we are going for solid groove. Groove to get your hips loosened and bodies grinding.

Time & Space

You know when you’re in love with someone? But like not just an everyday love, we are talking a deep cosmic inter-twining, obsessive love. A love like they could be on the other side of the planet but your bond is so strong that you can feel them sitting on the bed with you.. a love that burns in your belly and aches when they’re not around. That’s what Time & Space is about.
