Track By Track: Brandon Can't Dance on Graveyard of Good Times

16 January 2017, 10:00

Philadelphian songwriter Brandon Ayres, aka Brandon Can't Dance, has just released his latest album Graveyard of Good Times.

Closely linked to the likes of Alex G and a touring buddy of LVL UP, Ayres has been self-releasing records for a good while now, but Graveyard of Good Times could be the one which finally leads to biigger and better things.

Below, you can stream the new record and be guided through it via Ayres' track by track thoughts.

Headspace

This is me dealing with my bipolar depression and how is can be a whirlwind of thoughts at once and dampen friendships sometimes. Similar to the song ‘Angelina’ in a way, I'm at a time where everyone's getting married and having kids and I'm thinking "it's all over" as far as friendships go but I know in the back of my head it isn't.

Smoke and Drive Around

This song sums up a lot of nostalgic feelings from my youth growing up in the burbs right outside Philly. Parties in the woods, driving with friends around town for no reason and basically not giving a fuck.

Greyhound Named Chelsea

Sundays have always made me feel down in some way. I'm pretty sure it was written on a Sunday. There is no real rhyme or reason for this song lyrically. It's scrambled thoughts and the chorus made me laugh when I started singing it, so it is what it is.

Pop Queen of the Teen Scene

This is is a vague, surreal, internal monologue of a rising tv/pop star filled with self doubt and self awareness

Where My Boys At

This track is basically a Friday worth of events after school let's out, leading into the night. Pickin' up the boys, asking older siblings to get you cigs and beer, playing music, and then finding out where the party is.

So Deep So Tortured So Freak

Some of my songs are attempts at being dark and moody musically and lyrically, yet I'm basically poking fun at myself the entire song. This one is pretty self deprecating.

She Loves Anime

This is about a boy who makes up his own girlfriend after he has a nerve wrecking experience with an actual girl in her house while her parents are home. He draws up a girlfriend and the world around her.

Fuck Off and We'll Get Along

This song literally has no meaning. The instrumentation is all on one track through my loop pedal and then recorded vocals separately. It's similar to a lot of the very early albums I did where everything was looped on one track and that was the entire song.

Rock Is Dead

"Rock Is Dead" is a metaphor for a relationship. They can be boring or a little strange sometimes. I like something in the middle. It also relates to my actual feelings on the current state of rock (underground and mainstream) but the music itself has a pretty basic and cliche chord progression which is funny to me.

Angelina

"Angelina" is about a girl battling depression at a time when her friends are getting married and having kids. She lives in the past and her trust issues and mental illness run her life.
