Track By Track: Slaughter Beach on Heroic Dose
Friday heralds the release of Heroic Dose, the second EP from Danish three-piece Slaughter Beach. Today, you can stream the record alongside a track-by-track guide from the band.
The Odense-based trio of Nikolaj Westi, Mads Emil Aagaard and Hasse Mydtskov released their debut EP Love/Venice last year and the dream-pop band have gone from strength to strength since then, adding some fuzz and edge to their blissful sound.
Below, you can stream Heroic Dose and get a guided tour through the record courtesy of the Danes.
Glaze
“We feel like this track embodies the spirit and vibe of our past, present and future as a band. There’s always been a tang of nostalgia in our music, but as a band we’ve never been striving for just being great at emulating our heroes of some lost golden age of music. With 'Glaze' we feel as though we’ve made something that’s nostalgic and futuristic at the same time.”
Shere Khan
“I (Nikolaj) have a friend who has a special kind of hold on the people he spends time with. He has the kind of unconventional perspective on things that you would have never thought of yourself, which in a strange way always makes sense. He’s very good at cheering you up but leaves you questioning everything about yourself which can be encouraging but at the same time difficult to deal with for some. When I made the early demo for 'Shere Khan' I didn’t intend to write about anyone in particular, but as the song progressed I realized that I was writing about this friend of mine and the effect he has on me for better and worse.”
The Mo
“This song was the first written for the new EP. Nikolaj made the rough demo for it in January and we all almost instantly felt that this was the direction we wanted to go with the new EP. There was however a couple of months of noodling around with the structure and production, and the song didn’t find its final form until almost all of the EP was done. One night we sat working in our studio and the bombastic kinda hip-hoppy beat quickly started forming, at first as a bit of a joke but one thing led to another and in the stretch of an hour or so we’d made what the track would end up like. Listening back the next day we felt like we’d made a really great song and that is how we feel like to this day.”
Amputee
“Amputee is probably the most straightforward of the songs on the EP. All the parts of the song came very naturally, so the composition of the first draft ended up being the one we went with. It has a sort of light feel to it which we found refreshing in context of the EP.”
Disc
“Disc is meant to be a journey as the song slowly removes its focus from the sound of guitars and enters something new. We like to think that it’s a statement of the transition we feel that we’re going through as a band.”
Heroic Dose is out October 7 through Norway's Brilliance Records.
