Track by Track: Colouring on their Symmetry EP
London-based band Colouring talk us through their debut EP ahead of their first show of the year at January's Communion Night this Sunday.
The Symmetry EP is a culmination of things we've been working on over the past year. We all grew up listening to all different kinds of music that our parents, brothers, friends etc would play us and I think this variety growing up has really reflected the way we make music now. We started Colouring as a way to feel comfortable with merging these many influences under the same umbrella.
Symmetry
"Symmetry" is the centrepiece of the EP. It was written at a time when our lives were changing; we'd moved to London, the music we were making felt exciting, and things were falling into place for us as a band. I think in hindsight, this song was subconsciously written about that time.
In Motion
"In Motion" was the first thing we ever did for Colouring. At the time we were working on a different project and I had started making electronic music on the side. When I showed the rest of the band, we got excited about this new stuff and felt in agreement that we were in a new place. This song marked the beginning of Colouring.
Everything Has Grown
"Everything Has Grown" is pretty close to me personally. When I showed the boys, we felt that we needed to show this alongside more electronic stuff, as we realised that nobody just listens to one type of music or one genre anymore. Putting a folk song next to a dance tune can absolutely make sense - or so we believe, anyway! That's the beautiful thing about current popular music.
About You
"About You" was written with electronic musician Tourist. We made it a while back, and it got shelved for a bit as we didn't know what to do with it. I rediscovered the track one day in my iTunes and played it to a producer friend of ours, Luca Buccellati, who we were working with at the time. He loved it and helped us finish it.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine
This was just us messing around one evening in our bedroom studio - we never imagined putting someone else's song on our first EP! Obviously, nobody can touch Marvin Gaye, so we wanted to take it as far away from the original as we could. Not many people realise how heart-wrenching the lyrics of this song are - all these dark lines like "losing you would end my life, you see," whilst making you want to dance! We wanted to flip the arrangement and present it as if this guy was losing his mind. When we listened back, we felt like it could have a place on the EP - why not?
