Stevie Nicks live in London
With a setlist that’s all killer and little filler, Stevie Nicks turns in one of BST Hyde Park’s best sets to date.
A surprising lack of ceremony or ego surrounds Stevie Nicks’ headlining show at Hyde Park.
While the 76-year-old Nicks peppers her set with (sometimes quite rambling) stories of her early days in music, trademark shawls, and remembrances of lost friends, it’s the songs that stand out above all else.
With a throwback setlist that includes little from outside her first two solo records and the Fleetwood Mac back catalogue, Nicks’ husky voice - slowed down just a little over the years - finds a cushion in heart-on-sleeve plaudits for her life, bandmates and the audience. “Gold Dust Woman” and “Rhiannon” land perfectly; “Edge of Seventeen” is teased with an overlong intro that her band clearly relish while a duet with her vocal coach Steve Real is more cute than saccharine.
There’s repeated chats for “Silver Springs” - a song she last played solo almost 15 years ago (and 20 years with Fleetwood Mac) – but its absence is more than made up for by an encore with Harry Styles on “Stop Draggin' My Heart Around” and “Landslide”. Stoic, professional and deferential, Styles presents as a minor character next Nicks, holding her hand as both friend and support as she tells Hyde Park that today is Christine McVie’s birthday: “She was Harry’s girl and she was my girl, she was your girl. And she loved all of this. And today was her birthday, so, it’s taken me all this time to try to deal with this situation.” It’s an emotional end to a show that’s a lesson in how to do it right.
