Lonelady: One to Watch for 2010

17 December 2009, 10:18

Whilst 2009 might have been the year of Lady Gaga, 2010 will be the year of Lonelady. Warp’s latest signing might also hark back to the large shouldered era of the 1980′s, but her minimal electro-pop take on things sound fresher than the recent rehashes my Gaga and La Roux.

Pop music with a dark twist is a hard thing to pull off, yet Lonelady manages it with aplomb – the album, Nerve Up, will be released in February, and you feel that it’s perfectly timed: the nights are still cold and dark but there’s the hint of reprieve as the mornings get lighter and the temperature begins to slowly rise… This is the perfect soundtrack to these events and, like Spring itself, it’s eagerly awaited.

We caught up with The Lady…

For people out there that have never heard of you. Give us three reasons why they should…
Aggression / space and that which agogs

Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?
No moment existed, but I knew I was going to be an artist from a very young age.

Where do your songs come from? What’s your inspiration?
A drive for truth/meaning/a catchy hook/ a great beat/a shimmering perfect song that lasts 3m30secs/

Name your Top 5 records.
Can’t: might be able to do this on my deathbed, but they change. Unknown Pleasures, Metal Box, A-Z, Entertainment, Murmur, The Immaculate Collection ? or something like it, maybe.

What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
Its is lost in time and, yes, in some ways.

What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
Most review/criticism is irrelevant.

What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
The internet.

If you weren’t making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
What I’ve always done; art, writing; wading deeper out from unemployability/normality.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
An assistant to a cheerful photographer who expected me to be on call 24/7, and also be bright & breezy..not really her fault but excruciating for me / Any office job as it scrapes away the spirit; the office becomes schoolroom again, only the pupils are now cynical adults / Have worked in a ham factory but this was much preferable to the above.

We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
Theme is skint + violence:
1. Anything by Throbbing Gristle,
2. Non – Clock DVA, White Souls In Black Suits
3. Decades (live) – Joy Division, Heart & Soul
4. The Cockfighter – Scott Walker, Tilt
5. Mere Pseud Mag Ed. – The Fall, Hex Enduction Hour
