On Song :: Mike Bones
Fresh off the back of releasing the rather understated A Fool For Everyone in recent weeks and a guest slot on The Culture Show (two songs on the extended edition no less!) we thought we’d try and shed some more light on the elusive artist that is Mike Bones. One of the best guitarists in New York apparently… Whilst we did find out what music he likes to play post-coitus, I’m not sure we’ve exactly succeded in revealing much, but the album is rather good…What was the first song that really caught your imagination?
“TV Eye” by The Stooges.
What was the music your parents liked and do you think it’s influenced you at all?
My parents had a lot of Motown and classic rock records. Of course, that stuff influenced me.
What posters did you have on your wall as a kid?
I had a blacklight poster of the cover of “The Trooper” by Iron Maiden.
Which songs or albums would you play at a party?
I avoid parties.
Which songs remind you of a rainy day?
I have an awful memory.
Which album do you seek solace in when you are feeling sad?
C’mon… I don’t get sad.
Which album would you play when you wanted to get down to some lovin’?
I don’t listen to music when I’m having sex. It’s distracting. Last night though, we put on “Paper Hats” by This Heat after we were done. Is that too much information? You asked.
What music was, or would be, the “first dance” at your wedding?
“This Waltz” by Leonard Cohen. That would make everyone a bit uncomfortable, wouldn’t it?
What was the first gig you went to as a paying customer?
My uncle took me to see Metallica when I was a little kid–best night of my life I think.
Name the one song you think everyone should hear.
“Better Change Your Mind” by William Onyeabor. I think Vampire Weekend just covered this song. They probably ruined it.
Which one artist do you think not enough people know about?
Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip just made a solo record. It’s absolutely beautiful.
What’s the best thing you’ve heard recently?
3 things: the Sublime Frequencies records by Group Inerane and Group Doueh and some unfinished songs by Sleepy Doug Shaw aka Highlife.
Dead or alive, what 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
Omar Souleyman, John Coltrane, Tinariwen, Endless Boogie and Bad Brains.
We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
Theme: Songs To Get You Out Of The House
“Pay To Cum” by Bad Brains
“Waiting For The Bus” by ZZ Top
“Great Big Kiss” by Johnny Thunders
“High Again” by Thomas Bangalter
“Alien In A Garbage Dump” by Eric Copeland
And finally, who would win in a fight: a stoat or a goat and why?
Sorry, I don’t know what a stoat is.
