Introducing :: Girls
This isn’t some kind of pre-pubescent agony Aunt column… Oh no, this is an interview with Girls, the San Francisco duo who’ve been wooing the nations journalists with their lack of media-training. Their love of prescription meds would make a seasoned chemist blush, and it’s this drowning, woozy feeling that permeates their music.
We caught up with Christopher Owens to find out about their, erm, love of the quote scripture…
For people out there that have never heard of you. Give us three reasons why they should.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead yet shall he live.”
Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?
No, but then again I can’t recall a lot of things, but i know it had a lot to do with idolizing other men.
Where do your songs come from? What’s your inspiration?
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive.
to the voice of my pleas for mercy.
Name your Top 5 records.
Dangerous – Michael Jackson
Lemon Incest – Charlotte Gainsbourg
The Strange Idols Pattern and other short stories – Felt
His Hand In Mine – Elvis
Dog Man Star – Suede
What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
February 16th 2008, massive success, our first show is the show we know all the others have to be as good as, if not better, but thats hard to imagine.
What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”
What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
Drugs.
If you weren’t making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
Working a crap job. And drugs.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Construction, or dishwashing, not sure.
We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
