After Hours: Mothlite
Mothlite release their mesmerising debut album The Flax Of Reverie next week via Southern Records. It’s hard to pin a category on these guys – their music is simply epic. A whirring carousel of sound that occasionally feels like your listening to the end of the world happening before your very ears. Listen to some songs here or even better, buy the album here.
Find out what the London based duo have been watching/reading/listening to lately…
Who’s your favourite new band at the moment? Tell us a bit about them.
New bands of interest are few and far between. Fovea Hex has been working for me lately. That’s Clodagh Simonds’ ambient project with favourable collaborators… including Eno, Carter Burwell, Andrew Mckenzie, etc.
What’s been the best album you’ve heard in the last 12 months?
Ulver – Shadows of the Sun.
What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it?
It was August Strindberg’s Inferno / Occult Diaries. Highly recommended.
What was the last film your saw in the cinema and was it any good?
No Country for Old Men. It was very good. I didn’t notice at the time, but there was no soundtrack. Even better.
If push came to shove, what’s your all-time favourite song and why?
Let’s hope push never comes to shove. Today maybe ‘High on a Rocky Ledge’ by Moondog. Tomorrow possibly Led Zeppelin’s ‘In the Light’. Ad infinitum. It would have to be something on the ascendant. Actually it would probably be something off Laughing Stock. Maybe ‘New Grass’.
MP3 / CD / Vinyl: what’s your format of choice?
Vinyl generally. It’s all useful though. Mp3’s are the least appealing.
What’s the best TV show you’re currently following?
I was watching Dexter. That’s finished now.
What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
A girl at school once said I had a big head. I could never figure out if she meant I was conceited or if I physically had a large head. The latter would’ve upset me more. The former was probably justified at the time. I had a devil lock.
What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
The internet. Otherwise, nothing is wasteful.
Do you follow any type of sport? If so, who’s your “home team”?
Not really. My home team is Fatima Whitbread.
What’s your poison?
Tea.
We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
Let’s go with a few tearjerkers…
Arvo Part – Silentium (from Tabula Rasa)
Miles Davis – Concierto de Aranjuez (from Sketches of Spain)
Talk Talk – After the Flood (from Laughing Stock)
Swans – Blackmail (from Children of God)
Nico – My Only Child (from Desertshore)
Mothlite are playing in London with Southern label mates Earth on 17th July at the Scala, Kings Cross.
