What people bought at the first independent label market in Paris
Le Marché des Labels Indépendants, which launched this past weekend, brought seventy-five independent record labels across Europe together for the first event of its kind in Paris.
Held in partnership with AIM and the SPPF (Société Civile des Producteurs de Phonogrammes en France), the event marks another successful foray into new territory for the Label Market enterprise, with Paris taking its place alongside London, Bristol, LA, Berlin, Hamburg and Barcelona as host cities.
Throughout the day there were artist signings and labels showcasing their extended back catalogues, as well as exclusives, rarities, signed merchandise and advance copies. We headed to the Halle Des Blancs-Manteaux to find out just what the discerning Parisian music fan was spending their money on.

I usually buy 1 record a month, and the rest I stream online. As soon as I find something I really love, I try to find the vinyl. Today I bought a Caribou record and this year I also bought the latest Queens of the Stone Age which is great, as well as the reissue of the first album of The Shoes, the latest Daft Punk, and some soul records like Charles Barkley. I don't really follow the French scene that closely, but I like the electro scene from Reims (Yuksek, Brodinski).

I bought 4 records from City Slang: Caribou, Nada Surf, and Roosevelt whom I didn't know but listened on the stand and thought it was great. I buy vinyls occasionally to listen on an old record player that I have. Otherwise I stream on Spotify or Qobuz which is supposed to have a better audio quality.

I bought the Armand Melies record, I'm a fan! I had the CD but not the vinyl. He played for Alain Bashung, Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine, or more recently Julien Doré. I actually don't have a record player yet but I like the object, so I'm kind of starting a collection. In general I really like guitar players: Matthieu Chedid, Ibrahim Maalouf, etc. and I also listen to music from the Antilles, which is home.

I bought Yula Kasp from the Kill the DJ stand, it's a French electronic label. I also really like hip-hop and there's loads of good labels here, but not many hip-hop ones, it's a shame. It looks like it's a separate world in France. I'm also a DJ and I sing so I listen to a lot of music, and I like to support independent labels.

I bought an Arctic Monkeys record. I got into vinyls when I found a second hand record of Little Richard in a yard sale, so I went and bought a player and started a collection. I'm also making music so I'm more attentive to the sound quality and I like the vinyl sound much more.

I bought a double record by Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls, from the 80s. Also from that time a compilation of Paul Haig, who was affiliated with Joseph K. He was doing some post punk originally, but then in the early 1980s he did tracks that were produced by some of New Order. He's not really known but he's had an interesting life! I got a few thousands CDs and a few hundreds vinyls. It's becoming a bit of a space problem now... I go to gigs two or three times a week, small venues like La Maroquinerie, Cafe de la Danse, or le Point Ephemere. There's a lot happening in Paris.

I got a signed copy of Metronomy... I didn't even know he was here! I rarely buy records now, but used to more in the 1990s. Rock, metal, jazz, pop... last gig I went to was the Budos Band, it's a bit of a rock brass band with afro-jazz influences. It's from that small label Daptone Records (Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones). I really like Drag City too, and Ty Segall, he's one of my favorite artists. It takes time but usually, what I love I buy!

I came here because I have a friend who works for a label, and then I had a browse and bought a Gonzales record. I didn't have a record player until now but a friend took pity on me and got me one as a gift! So I'm starting a small collection. Otherwise I like browsing and making playlists on Soundcloud, it's a really good discovery tool!
