TLOBF Exclusive :: Communion's Ten Point Plan to Creating the Perfect Club Night
Communion is a club night and record label based in West London.
It’s run by Kevin Jones and Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons and has been growing steadily since 2006.
It’s based in Notting Hill Arts Club and each month they put on sold-out shows.
The Communion event has grown so much they run simultaneous nights in Leeds and Brighton each month and are launching a new one in Bath early next year.
On-top of this they are launching as a record label and their first compilation features exclusive music from the likes of Johnny Flynn, Peggy Sue, Alessi’s Ark, Broadcast 2000 and more.
The Gents came up with a Ten Point Plan to creating the Perfect Club Night.
1: Find yourself a decent venue, somewhere that has a reputation or something unique about it – somewhere people want to play.
2: Get some mates involved, promoting is stressful and even if it’s only for moral support you’ll be glad of it!
3: Only book bands you are passionate about – if you are excited about a band that will rub off on other people, it’s amazing how many promoters don’t actually champion bands, and musicians will remember you if you are genuinely excited about them, spread the word and hopefully come back to play once they are bigger!
4: Don’t try to make money, your main priority should be making sure that bands and audiences are happy, money shouldn’t come into the picture.
5: Get as many people as drunk as possible!
6: Take chances – if there’s a safe option when you are booking bands or coming up with ideas, don’t go for it. Even if what you try doesn’t work out, you’ll learn from it, and if it works people will love it!
7: Never rest on your laurels, always think about new ways to do things, keep things fresh.
8: Be nice to people! As everyone who is involved with Communion is also a musician we know that when you arrive at a venue you are already tired and stressed, knowing you have to wait hours before you actually have to go on stage – a friendly face can make such a difference. Again, so many promoters are very grumpy, it doesn’t make you want to come back!
9: Involve everyone – people love feeling a part of something and any night is only as good as the people that attend. Ask friends to DJ, get involved with artwork or organising things. Remember it’s not your night it’s everyone’s.
10. Oh and always remember that one Golden Rule…Get as many people as drunk as possible!
