Yucatan: One to Watch for 2010
As the year draws to a close, we start to look ahead to the wonderfully Sci-Fi sounding 2010. As part of this, we’re going to be running a series of Introducing interviews with bands we think people should be keeping an eye and ear out for in the coming 12 months.
First up are the Welsh answer to Sigur Ros – Yucatan. Their wonderful produced soundscapes have produced a number of small and limited released EP’s so far, and they’re playing the Queen Of Hoxton tonight. Their latest EP was released on the 30th of November and continues their exploration of post-rock and ambient quasi-folk. We spoke to Dilwyn from the band to find out more about them.
For people out there that have never heard of you. Give us three reasons why they should…
Yucatan is creating something new.
They may find feeling they never knew they had.
We can make their day better.
Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?
I’ve always felt the need to creat and as a teenager was exited by art aswell as music. I dont think of myself as a musician. I’m just intersted in music.
Where do your songs come from? What’s your inspiration?
I’m intersted in nothingness. It’s so pure. That’s the bases and then comes other things like existence.
Name your Top 5 records.
Pixes – Doolitle
Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin
Beta Band – Three EP’s
Sigur Ros – Agaetis Byrjun
Echo & the Bunnymen – Heaven Up Here
What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
It was in a place called Ty Newydd Sarn at the far end of north west Wales. That’s all i can remember I’m afraid.
What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
I just do my thing really. I don’t worry about what people think. But I try and take what people say on board if I thinks they have a point.
What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
Shaving my beard.
If you weren’t making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d be putting on gigs and festivals and going to gigs and making art.
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
Jam factory was really bad but the smell was nice.
We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
