We hung out with DNCE in London and took these incredible photos
We photographed funk-pop quartet DNCE in London ahead of their slot supporting Bruno Mars at a huge Saturday night show in Hyde Park - and spoke to lead singer Joe Jonas about the nine songs that have shaped his life. Photography by Mathew Parri Thomas.
“These songs were all important to me at some point in my life,” explains Jonas, “Some of them make me remember my childhood, or a time in my life that I’d lean on the song for help.”

“The first three songs I chose were no brainers as they’ve always been on my most-played list, but after that it started getting tricky to narrow down. But I was glad to go back and collect the songs that have moved me the most, and I’ve been listening to the playlist a lot between shows.”

Speaking about Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Jonas says: “Queen and Freddie Mercury are heroes to me and musically they inspire so much of what I do now. As a band we walk out on stage to this song, so it’s really important for us as a unit. It sets the mood, especially at a big show like the show at Hyde Park: you walk out to Queen and it makes you proud!”

Jonas revealed how he took inspiration from the performers he idolises to shape his identity as a frontman: from the flamboyance and artistry of Freddie Mercury and Boy George, to the rock ‘n’ roll sex appeal of Rod Stewart. “For a long time Rod was a hero and an icon to me. “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” is just such a confident song. I think all artists have a different persona they go into, or a switch they hit when they walk on stage, and I would listen to this as a warmup song to get to that place before I performed.”

Speaking about Nirvana’s “Come As You Are”, Jonas says: “As a ‘90s kid, Nirvana was the best rock ‘n’ roll band of the era, and this is my favourite of their songs. Kurt Cobain was such a great frontman - he obviously cared a lot about his family and his music but he didn’t take himself seriously and he wore what he wanted on stage”

“This one is kind of a rare bird,” says Jonas of Jefferson Starship’s 1979 song “Jane”. “It’s one that I think rock lovers from the ‘70s and ‘80s will know. It brings back childhood memories, but it’s also just a badass rock ‘n’ roll song. I love southern rock and it definitely has an influence on the music I make with DNCE now.”
