London – The Lexington

We drove to The Lexington and unloaded. Straight after we had to pick up a 8×10 Bass cabinet for our support band on the night Devilman. DJ Scotch Egg plays bass in this amazing Japanese two-piece. They absolutely smashed it on stage later which made hauling an incredibly heavy amp up several narrow flights of stairs totally worthwhile. They’ve got a new release coming out soon so check them out.

The Lexington has been one of our favourite live venues in London for a while now, so we were well excited to play it. We had also worked very closely with the promoter on putting this one together, hand picking the other artists which also included Youth in Colour. In classic YIC style, they had managed to forget their piano (a fundamental instrument in their setup!) and had to rush home to pick it up an hour before going on stage!

The atmosphere at the venue was fantastic all the way through the night and the soundman Joe, despite having some major issues with the fact that Matt uses a PC, was absolutely solid throughout.

We played to around a full capacity venue (around 200 people) and there were so many people that we didnt know. It was really special to be part of such an excellent show. Thanks to The Local for putting it on, and the other acts for smashing it in their own ways. Most of all, thanks to everyone that came, our friends who have seen us a billion times already that still like to come out for a good night, and to those new friends and curious punters who all seemed to really enjoy it.

It was the biggest show we’ve done to date, we were all bricking it but seeing our friend Lewis (DJ Lethem) in the DJ booth as we came up onto the stage made me feel at home. Off to Manchester, the mighty North, where things really kick off and we finally get to feel like we’re on a proper tour (no stops at parents houses, no returning to home), just 2 solid weeks of gigs!

Manchester – Contact Theatre

Following the worst drive of the tour to date which was 50% spent in traffic… we made it the Contact Theatre. the gig was really in the foyer rather than the theatre space itself, but it provided a huge soundsystem arranged kindly by the Promoters, Mind on Fire who have been putting awesome shows on recently including Mt Kimbie and Kelpe who we’re big fans of.

Lowell, Ben and Joe, who run Mind on Fire were solid guys. They had collaborated with Atl. Ctl. Shift. a local magazine, to put the night together as a fundraiser for the Haiti earthquake appeal. There was a raffle with some of the most amazing prizes (white Kappa zip-up tops) and an art auction. It was an unusual lineup on the night, with a dub group and a posse of ‘aggy’ rappers but we got a great response and people were ultimately out for a good time so they were dancing along happily. Apples & Pears sounded absolutely ridiculous when the bass dropped and we all laughed at it!

Simon won a Kappa top, Matt has pledged to wear it on stage in Glasgow in a few days time.

The getrification tour continued as we stayed at the promoters Lowell’s parents house. A beautiful home where music is in the family. Lowell cooked fantastic fish supper and we drank some very expensive looking whiskey, distilled in the Hebrides.

Thanks to Mind on Fire for putting us up, and thanks to our friends Capac who travelled all the way from Liverpool to catch us.
