Deers and Parrots share memories of touring; unveil Mac DeMarco-featuring tour film exclusively on Best Fit
"Every time I went on tour I get high, fortunately I have a camera to record everything."
So says Hache, filmmaker and tour documentarian for Madrid's Deers, who just clocked up their first lefit tour, taking in a bunch of UK and European dates and leaving a trail of acclaim and converted fans in their wake. Hache filmed the band - and their musical soul-mates The Parrots - during their time at Le Guess Who festival in Utrecht, Netherlands. Watch below and look out for a suitably on-brand cameo from Mac DeMarco.
The band, who play a special Best Fit show on 22 January in London, end 2014 on a clutch of ones-to-watch lists before heading into the new year and getting down to the hard work of recording their debut album.
We asked Deers - - for their enduring memory of the time they spent on tour.
Carlotta (Deers): "Sometimes people you meet when you're touring are not exactly as you expect, they can be even better haha. When we played with The Black Lips there in London they invited us after the gig to a dancing contest a friend of them was managing .. we all went there, we all had a number on our backs, but none of us got to dance.
"Amber still maintains that she saw Jared dancing.. but that's suspicious... only her haha."
Dani (The Parrots): "So, it was our first gig in London. i wasn't bringing my cymbals 'cause the promoter said they were going to have them all.... yes you can see it coming haha. I arrived at the Sebright Arms and there were no cymbals, 3 hours left to the gig...I phoned carlotta from Deers ('cause they were in london too) so maybe she could save me. In fact deers were doing an interview with The Line of Best Fit at that very moment haha. She put me in contact with Danny (drummer from Pink Film) and that's when Danny became our super hero lending me his cymbals.
"The show was amazing by the way haha."
Ade (Deers): "beds? sofas? ..what for? all you need is a potato sac. so... we played Bestival at a very small stage and someone told us we had a tent to sleep in, but we never got to see it. we just stole a potato sac and slept in it in a big metal box that was meant to be used as a locker for our instruments. rock n roll."
Alex (The Parrots): "The first time The Parrots played out of Spain we went to Lisbon. It was like a festival-battle-of-bands thing, but they were paying for the flights and the accommodation so we were freaking out 'cause we had started the band few months ago.
"Anyway a Spanish friend of us was studying there so after the soundcheck we went to his house and we found there such a big international party with people from everywhere and with too much alcohol haha. We hardly arrived to the gig, and ... no, we didn't win haha but it was the first experience away from home and we really had a good time."
Amber (Deers): "Portuguese policemen took our tour manager's driving licence away in Lisbon because of driving drunk. He faked crying but it didn't work. Still waiting for the 500 euros fine. LOL."
Diego (The Parrots): "In one of our shows we gave masks with our roadie's face (who's also on the cover of our first 7") to everyone, and we didn't realise what a bad idea it was until we started to play. All of a sudden we had 200 slender male black and white faces staring at us.
"It was a crazy show but the weirdest trip I've ever had."
Ana (Deers): "After policemen retired the driving licence of our tour manager in Lisbon, we had a meeting with our manager right before the show. He told us we had an email from a serious lawyer saying that we HAVE TO change our band name, yes, Deers."
