All Apologies: Petal

Like a suckerpunch to the gut, the emotional weight that runs through Petal's latest album - Magic Gone - is beyond compare.

Split across two sides, its first half was written prior to her entrance into treatment to address the mental health disorders she’d been suffering, whilst side two was penned while she was in recovery, fighting successfully to overcome the difficulties of the past few years.

Making a long overdue trip to Europe later this month for a run of shows, we caught up with the unimtiable Kiley Lotz for the Best Fit Q&A. Watch a stark, stripped back piano version of album centrepiece "Magic Gone" below.

What's your present state of mind and being?

I’m very tired and sitting in the passport office. There was a picture of Trump as soon as I got in the building and I wanted to cry. My little kitten, Collin, kept me up last night but he’s so cute it’s hard to be mad at him. He is a kitten after all.

What’s the most overrated virtue?

Gentleness. While it is absolutely necessary in terms of dealing with yourself and your own growth, gentleness is a virtue used to subdue and oppress all kinds of non-white/non-cis/non-male people/non-straight people. The idea that you have to maintain a calm demeanor to avoid the risk of harm or being perceived as out of control or hysterical- is a tactic used by powerful patriarchs.

What one thing have you learnt from your parents?

That everyone is deserving of love and respect-and bullies will not be tolerated.

What and where was the greatest meal you ever ate?

Hmmmmm. This pasta dish in Brooklyn with my manager, Jeanette. It was so so delicious. It was fresh and so flavorful, I think about it often. We sat outside and had such a good meal.

What’s your most treasured possession?

My Madeline doll and my Care Bear. I’ve had them all my life and have taken them with me wherever I have lived.

What was the last dream you had about?

Lately they’ve been dystopian and vivid.

What's the biggest lie on your Wikipedia page?

It all looks pretty standard, I guess that I write emo music seems to be the only thing that is “meh?” To me.

If you could say something to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?

You’re not alone, you’re not a burden, you’re going to make good friends and you’re going to be okay. High school sucks.

Petal plays a string of European dates later this month, including London's KOKO on November 13 alongside Shakey Graves. Magic Gone is out now on Run For Cover Records.
