EVER's There’s Nothing Small About Talking To You is a heart-warming second effort
"There's Nothing Small About Talking To You"
EVER, moniker of Louise Smith, is fast establishing her outlier status in the prolific field of alt-pop, boasting glisteningly optimistic yet heartfelt songwriting that found increased exposure through effervescent debut EP Golden Hour back in 2019.
Sophomore six-track affair There’s Nothing Small About Talking To You rescales the glossy high notes that graced her first collection, merging personal lyricism with pastel instrumentals – a tightrope navigated between carefree poolside ambience and bittersweet confessionalism. “Selfish” exists in a shimmering prism, “Natural Wonder” a standout big beat ‘80s electro-pop primed number that undulates alongside Smith’s softer vocals, whilst blistering “Sleep On Me” figures as a feverish hybrid between Vanessa Carlton-esque piano ballad and more dance-leaning tropes. The latter perhaps owing to the importance noughties nostalgia plays as an influence in EVER’s work.
Smith renders sincere torch songs with a fun-loving vibe, a strain that resonates on sonic heatwave “Catch the Rain,” which harnesses the slow-moving gravitas of acts such as London Grammar. “Soon” represents a heartfelt, gently unwinding offering that contrasts with more dynamic moments. This interplay between summer glow and contemplation holds the EP together, EVER orientating through a cycle of emotions, tracks ranging between love, betrayal and grief whilst maintaining a benignly upbeat sheen – infectious synth lines, balmy bass bounce and propulsive drum flourishes that strike a fine line between introspection and celebration.
