New East London talent Rose Gray unveils a shimmering delight of a debut with "good life"
Sometimes, life will get you down. But for new East London-based talent Rose Gray, that doesn't mean you're not living your life to the full. In fact, in her eyes having a good life "isn't all it seems. It's bitter... Sweet... But it's still sweet, I guess."
"good life" is a track where Rose Gray finds beauty in pain, where she depicts with stunning clarity and conviction her admiration for the way that people have an unending power to find their fight and battle through the hardest of times.
Her soulful vocals are like a warm blanket, cracking with a smokey maturity that has the power to completely engulf you with its charm.
The song is an empowering and poetic illustration of life and its trials and tribulations that plays on the traditional pop song structure whilst inflecting shades of R&B into the mix, meaning that the end result has a certain familiarity about it, like you've known this song for your whole life and have just been reacquainted with an old friend. It's a reminder to go easy on yourself and understand that whatever you're going through is simply another one of life's challenges that you will break through in the end.
Speaking on the meaning of the song, Gray says "I wrote ‘good life’ last summer, beginning life as some words on my phone. This track is about someone really close to me, and that unexplained beauty - more inside than out. Like, how sometimes no matter how much crap is going on in someones life they still have that fight. This person has that. I sing about working jobs to fund a passion, struggles with depression, family troubles.. being unlucky in love. It’s a personal observation but it's bigger than just one person, it's about a lot of people."
The song ultimately lays the groundwork for what is to come for this new talent, acting as a statement of creative intent that seems to show that she's going to be someone to keep an eye out for in the coming months.
