Stream Lisa Alma's new album Sweater in full, exclusively on Best Fit
Denmark's Lisa Alma is streaming her new record Sweater exclusively on Best Fit ahead of its release tomorrow (21 April), and has run through the tracklist in detail to explain the construction and inspiration of each track.
The album was written at her home in Copenhagen, after she'd bought an "old Louis Zwicki pianette". She uses the keys to underpin a series of intensely emotional lyrics about the three Ls - love, life and loss - all the while, slowly adding layers of '80s pop into the fray. The result is something singularly beguiling, and drenched in moments to ensure your attention.

Black
"The opening track is called “Black”. I wrote it only using the black keys on the piano. The song is inspired by the artist Louis Bourgeois’ “I had a flashback of something that never existed” from the fabric illustrated book, Ode à l’oubli. Black is both a colour and the absence of colour. I wanted to capture the feeling of believing in something that’s not there something indefinite and hazy. Still wanting it."
Invite
"“Invite” is a song about being foolishly in love. Like writing an old school love letter to someone asking them if they want to go out with you. Waiting in silence for the other one to respond. There’s a long unbearable gab between question and answer, and in the meanwhile your heart has already decided that you won’t take no for an answer. It feels so good and so bad to be foolishly in love."
Fern
"I heard a bad boy singing in my backyard: “We’re all just animals” and I remember feeling so close to nature. A fern is a member of a group of roughly 12,000 species of vascular plants that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. I had this picture of a fern in the middle of a field. Extremely exposed and on unfamiliar territory."
Man
"When I wake up in the morning I usually feel the urge to run away. Quite literally to move somewhere else and to live a totally opposite life with different priorities and values. Running away always seems like a really good idea when you’re tired of your own life. This song is an ode to those late nights where you don’t worry about the day tomorrow."
Trouble
"I like to work with the relation between the false and the real. “Trouble” stems from a fundamental frustration about always ending up in trouble. Trouble is a condition of pain you experience when you realise it’s too late to be honest towards another person and then you have to fake your way through this “friend” relationship."
Zimone
"This little piano theme is inspired by Simone de Beauvoir, who was a French writer, intellectualist, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist. I was doing a performance piece about de Beauvoir’s “One is not born a woman” when I put this together."
Raw
"I wrote this song after a first kiss. Like a raw piece of meat. Not having been subjected to adjustment, treatment, or analysis. That raw feeling when bodies meet instead of words. It’s that moment when you’re not innocent any longer, you just want more. Like an orgasm. “Raw” is a song that tries to capture the moment just before the explosion."
Low
"I remember as a child the feeling of falling off my bike. When you’re child you just cry and someone will comfort you and you feel the comfort immediately. When you get older it gets more difficult to ask someone for comfort and even feel the comfort. “Low” was to begin with a song about not feeling comfortable but when I hear the song after recording it it has a very comforting almost meditate sound and effect on me."
Unhurt 1
"“Unhurt 1” stems from a frustration I had over a friend/lover playing it too safe. I felt she was missing out. When you’re playing life safe you’re always free from danger, injury, or the threat of harm. This song is an encouragement to be sorry rather than safe."
Fine
"This was one of the first songs I wrote for “Sweater”. It came to me, effortlessly. The song is a combination of being in love and being extremely fascinated by this other one. Sometimes I have a hard time separating these two feelings. It’s a song to someone who’s excellent in character and delicately made like china."
Head Winds
"“Head Winds” is about giving someone space and room to grow. A head wind is a source of resistance, as to progress or success. We all need the resistance to grow."
Wild Heart
"I hate taming a wild heart. I hate restrictions. Sometimes it would be very convenient if you were able to be strangers again with someone you got know too well. Pretending that nothing’s wrong is just so stupid."
