Read Steve Albini's proposal letter to produce Nirvana's In Utero
Steve Albini‘s role as a producer has become something of a legend; a man who demands things be often recorded in one take, creating results both raw and pure. It’s interesting, then, to read his original proposal to produce Nirvana’s third and final album, In Utero.
With the record turning 20 years of age and seeing an anniversary reissue this week, his letter to the band has surfaced online.
It sees Albini talk about “minimal production”, “no interference from the front office bulletheads” and his refusal to take any royalties from albums he has a hand in making.
The highlight though comes in this killer line: “If a record takes more than a week to make, somebody’s fucking up”. Check the entire thing out below, via CoS:
