New Hackney venue the Moth Club set to open September
A brand new venue called Moth Club is opening in Hackney this autumn, featuring several different rooms of music, a dance hall, booth seating, and a "hidden drinking den".
Lanzarote - the team behind The Shacklewell Arms, The Waiting Room, The Adam & Eve and The Lock Tavern - will be helming the programming wing of the venue, and aims to "provide an eclectic mix of events and traditional members club style entertainment". This includes bingo, cabaret, hot breath karaoke, krautrock karaoke, interactive film screenings, live comedy, race nights, and live gameshows.
The club will throw open its doors on 7 August to host a Visions Festival Pre-Party, featuring the likes of Ceremony, Bad Breeding, and Chain Of Flowers. On 8 August, Ho99o9, Blanck Mass, Gazelle Twin, Theo Verney, The Big Moon, and Claw Marks will play the venue as part of Visions Festival proper.
The officiual launch will be on 3 September with a full weekend of music and entertainment. It will be open seven days a week.
The club itself, an ex-serviceman's club, was the command headquarters of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (M.O.T.H), and originally named the General Browning. M.O.T.H, founded by C.A. Evenden in South Africa back in the 1920s, was set up as a "brotherhood to support fellow comrades", with three basic principles: "True Comradeship - The application of front line friendship to civilian life, Mutual Help - A personal & collective obligation to help each other, and Sound Memory - To remember the fallen as a living companionship."
The Hackney branch (or 'shellhole') opened in 1972, and will continue to hold regular "General Browning member meetings on the first Friday of each month and British Legion meetings on the first Monday of each month."
