Chance the Rapper's free mixtape makes charts, distributed on Amazon without permission
Chicago’s Chance the Rapper released a mixtape called Acid Rap on 30 April for free via his website. It’s still available as a free download, although it’s been selling elsewhere. Without the artist’s permission. Nonetheless, the mixtape has sold enough copies to make charts.
According to Billboard, a company called Mtc is putting out the album, which has been made available on Amazon and iTunes (although the latter has stopped distributing the tape at Chance the Rapper’s insistence).
Apparently since the rapper is currently unsigned, he lacks implicit songwriter protection, and thus is has to combat the illegitimate distribution of his work on an individual basis.
