San Zhi – Ice Light (Night Works Halloween Bad Dream mix)
On the day that ex-Metronomy member Gabriel Stebbing makes his debut live appearance as Night Works, along comes his remix of current Best Fit crush San Zhi. And, what’s more, it’s got a Halloween theme. #marketing
Night Works takes San Zhi’s dream-like debut single ‘Ice Light’ and practically strips it of its glacial wonder. Scratchy off-kilter production, free flowing guitar lines and stop start drum patterns offer a rather unsettling listening experience compared to the delicate fluffiness of the original, but, in fairness, it’s about as spooky as that old episode of Home & Away when Alf Stewart dreamt Ailsa had risen from the dead when really he was just whacked out of his mind from a morphine injection used to combat a near fatal heart attack.
If you’re London based, you can catch Night Works live tonight at The Sebright Arms in Hackney with support from Roman plus DJ sets from San Zhi. It’s free entry too. Fancy dress optional but probably welcomed.
Night Works’ third single ‘Modern European’ is out via Loose Lips on November 12, as is San Zhi’s Ice Light EP, which features cover versions of Robin S and Lauryn Hill. Their EP launch party is at Dalston Servant’s Quarters on November 8.
