Birmingham's Mutes completely stop us in our tracks on the bedroom-recorded "Memory Serves".
Inspired by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and armed with a stack of loop-pedals, Mutes have already introduced themselves as promising purveyors of quietly brilliant, experimental guitar music. New song "Memory Serves" hears the band shaved down to its original one-man line-up (the act recently being fleshed-out by three other members). Whilst it may be their most hushed creation to date, it certainly doesn't lack emotional weight.
Spun on whirring loops, fuzzy white noise and thimble acoustics, "Memory Serves"' simple pleasure is almost eternal. Thanks to its cyclical and unhurried nature, it's the perfect accompaniment for morning slumbers or pensive late-nights. Sometimes its these songs and not the obvious pop bangers that get us through a busy week or spark something in our imagination. Sometimes we just need a song that forces us to live in the moment: to stop, to pause, to breathe.
Recorded, says frontman James, on a "broken Tascam 4-track", "Memory Serves" is the first taste of his new solo EP No One Is Nowhere under the Mutes moniker (release date TBC).
Mutes as the full band will release a new EP via One Note Forever next year. Check out their live dates below:
