Eugene Quell brings fiction to life with the grungey "Song For Marla And Lucas"
Londoner Toby Hayes aka Eugene Quell shares "Song For Marla And Lucas", the latest song from his forthcoming EP I Will Work The Land.
Quell is Hayes' fictional alter-ego who exists in a "story based almost entirely on '80s cult cinema, rock’n’roll history and a broken nose."
On Quell's latest work we hear guitars squall over languid drums and deliciously grungey lurches - all preparing the listener for the song's messy tale.
"Lucas and Marla were actually Mr and Mrs Quell Snr. Sadly they died in a huge motor accident when Eugene was a teenager," Hayes explains. "They were trouble makers, and they raised a son that loves to be the fly in the ointment, especially at high-brow or high-class occasions when everyone else is kissing arse.
"As a tribute to them, this song is an ode to all the imposters out there, fucking with people's shit."
Hayes' vocal snarls befit Quell's unruly nature, heightened by gritty guitar solos that hang loose like a Cobain creation. Hayes says, however, that the track is "way more ROCK" than he would like it to be.
"Actually the whole EP is," he continues. "Expect things to lean slightly more towards early '80s disco from here on out.”
'90s grunge, slacker, or '80s disco, our ears are primed for more.
I Will Work The Land is released on 11 December via Tipp City (UK) and Exploding In Sound Records (US).
