Edinburgh-based pop soloist EMILIE tackles emotional suppression on "Eyes For You"
Emily Atkinson aka EMILIE has taken a leaf out of the no frills pop playbook to craft a song with strength in its simplicity.
"Eyes For You, taken from the Edinburgh-based soloist's debut EP, I See You In The Darkness, is a three-chord gem helmed by Atkinson's breathy, crystalline vocal.
Ghostly wails, finger clicks, and tumbling percussion gently complement the track's synth hook but it's Atkinson's vocals that make the biggest impact, growing bolder and bigger as the track progresses. At its peak, her voice doesn't sound a million miles away from BROODS singer George Nott.
"You won't compromise what you offer /another love will be suffered/[...] it doesn't matter what you say not/it's only gonna be a let down", Atkinson asserts throughout the song, deciding fight not flight is the answer to overcoming her lover's domineering power.
"'Eyes For You' was one of the last songs written for my prospective EP and was the most appropriate single of the collective which centres around suppression”, Atkinson says of the track.
EMILIE might not be reinventing the rulebook on "Eyes For You" but it's an infectious pop tune with ample darkness to keep us intrigued for the future.
I See You In The Darkness is released on 9 September via Stellar Recordings.
