Listen: Kind Of Like Spitting - "Bullied By A Bee"
Indie-emo Oregonians Kind Of Like Spitting nurtured a cultish appreciated thanks to relentless touring schedules and 12 albums in the space of seven years, but even that wasn't enough to stave off a split in 2006.
However, led by vocalist Ben Barnett, they returned earlier this year as a trio, which also comprises Brian Grant and Dante Johnson.
They've been busying themselves making a new record called It's Always Nice To See You with Warren Franklin & The Founding Fathers. The split LP is due 2 February on Topshelf Records, and late last year Vice premiered the first track from Kind Of Like Spitting in a decade.
"Bullied By A Bee" is chock full of grazed, low-slung riffs and abrasive rhythms. The instruments all coalesce in a metal-tinged melee, but the pre-verse bass breakdown and fuzz-pop vocals inject a sense of lightness and funkiness to the proceedings.
The new music, though determined to, has no idea where to pay homage - Anthrax? Pavement? Red Hot Chili Peppers? - but in this chaos is plenty of sweetness and moments of intrigue. The unexpected is always fascinating.
