Listen: George Cosby - “Ritual Blush” [Premiere]
It’s becoming increasingly hard to ignore the expanding chasm in the world of male singer-songwriters. The likes of Sam Smith and George Ezra have been flying the flag of late but there is undoubtedly an opening in the market for new talent. Step forward dark-pop hopeful, George Cosby.
The first track to appear from the young Londoner signals his intent and grabs attention with a visceral power. It’s the gutsy, throaty voice that takes centre-stage, pouring out above marching drums and layers of chunky, Anna Calvi-esque electric guitar, which is coloured by heady, reverberating riff-work. The deep emotion in the vocal brings Hozier’s initial outing to mind, a comparison Cosby could do a lot worse that sit next to. A heart-throbbing bass comes and goes heightening the punchy but subtle tension throughout.
